SOPHIE GLEDHILL

Cellist Sophie Gledhill enjoys the variety of life as a freelance musician based in London, regularly performing with orchestras including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Royal Ballet Sinfonia and English Touring Opera. Also a performer of chamber and solo repertoire, Sophie made her London concerto debut with the Lalo cello concerto at St John's, Smith Square. She feels lucky to have performed in countries across Europe and further afield, including Azerbaijan, China and the USA.
Sophie's appearances on radio and television include BBC Radio 3's In Tune with fellow cast members of the Baroque musical drama The Imperfect Pearl, a live session with Noah and the Whale on BBC Radio 2 and a solo performance during the televised live final of Stage, the most popular Persian language talent show.
Sophie especially loves to work in theatre. As well as playing in the orchestra pit for West End shows including Les Misérables, Wicked and Kinky Boots and on tour with West Side Story and Mary Poppins in the UK and Zürich, she has appeared on stage on a number of occasions. Most recently she was in a show called Opera for the Unknown Woman, an eco-feminist sci-fi multimedia opera in which she played a Kiwi character called Learmonth, sang and played scored and improvised solo cello.
Sophie received a degree in music from the University of Cambridge before moving to the USA for her master's degree in cello performance at the Eastman School of Music in upstate New York. Having well and truly caught the travel bug, Sophie can often be found in a coffee shop planning her next adventure tracking down wildlife with her camera. Sophie is excited to have launched the Global Patchwork Project, her quest to record one song from every country of the world on her cello.
